The EB10 School of Afonso Costa district, located in Setúbal, Portugal, underwent a major extension project in collaboration with the Setúbal City Hall project’s division (DOM-DIPCEM). The project’s goal was to deliver the quality that was missing for a learning place while keeping the centenary building intact. To achieve this, three new buildings were constructed, and the playground was volumetrically closed to provide security while still giving occupants freedom of movement. Routes diversity in accordance with home and business places have enabled to oppose some monotony prevailing on site.

To reduce work costs, the materials already used by the Setúbal City Hall project’s division in other school constructions were employed. The facade’s rhythm is not only demonstrative of a balanced opinion of integration but also of a crucial concern in this project, which is the maximum enjoyment of natural light in spaces.

The project’s concept was based on the pre-existence of a block defined by Setúbal City Hall, and the team worked towards extending the school while maintaining the existing building’s structure. The result is a welldesigned and functional school that provides a conducive learning environment for students.

The architects and interior designers involved in this project focused on architectural work and sustainable design, ensuring that the school’s design was sustainable and environmentally friendly, taking into account the use of natural light and the materials used in the construction process.

In terms of building architecture, the project’s team worked to ensure that the new buildings merged seamlessly with the existing structure. The result is a cohesive and well-designed building that enhances the learning experience for students and faculty members alike.
