The “Fraldinhas” watch was created by Swatch and Tempus Internacional in the context of a solidarity campaign to provide a new home for the “Ajuda de Berço” society, a non-profit organization that takes care of abandoned babies and small children. The new house was inaugurated on July 8th, 2004, resulting from the refurbishing of a set of rundown rural dwellings offered by the Lisbon City Hall.

The architectural proposal successfully merges the set of dwellings into a single house while maintaining the outer facade design. The house is divided into three major areas: the administrative area, the central area, and the babies’ area, each with a unique color in the corresponding outer facades: blue, yellow, and red. The interior of the house is designed to offer a comfortable and safe environment for the children. The open-air courtyard serves as a playground area, and a new solid volume coated with copper is added next to it, providing a visually appealing addition to the interior.

The architects and interior designers behind this project skillfully integrated sustainable design elements throughout the building and the use of the existing rural dwellings and the incorporation of sustainable materials and construction methods ensured the project’s sustainability.

The project stands as a testament to the importance of sustainable design, not only in creating a functional and aesthetically pleasing space but also in giving back to the community. The successful integration of interior construction and interior design projects into the overall architectural work is evident in the final result.

The “Fraldinhas” project showcases the skill and expertise of the architects and interior designers at Gonçalo Silva Arquitetos in creating a functional and sustainable space for the “Ajuda de Berço” society. The integration of sustainable design elements, building design, and architectural work, results in a successful interior project that provides a safe and comfortable environment for the children in the care of the organization.
