The project was aimed at providing a space for the former Cultural Center of Setúbal. The idea for the project came from the constraints defined by the preliminary program of cultural content and the existing building, which was a representative property of the city’s cultural and heritage history, but in poor condition. The building was previously used by the Círculo Cultural de Setúbal from 1975 to the late 1990s, and after being abandoned for several years, it was left in a precarious state.
The intervention, by Gonçalo Silva Arquitetos, was based on the principle of preserving the existing building’s heritage value, particularly its façades, resistant walls, the noble interior hall, and the access staircase to the first floor.
The aim of the project was to alter only the lightweight partition walls to meet the need to accommodate the cultural program. The main façade’s entire original design was maintained, retaining existing openings and correcting some alterations that had been made over time.
The roof, as well as the back façade, were significantly degraded and required complete replacement. To fully utilize the second floor, the project proposed a sloping roof with a mansard and gable windows. The intervention focused on the interior construction and interior design project, aimed to preserve the existing structure and heritage elements while adapting it to the new programmatic needs. The space is designed to accommodate cultural activities such as exhibitions, concerts, and theater performances. The main hall is the centerpiece of the interior project, and its majestic character was preserved while improving its acoustic performance and lighting.
Casa da Cultura’s building design project was developed based on the idea of preserving the heritage value of the existing building while adapting it to new cultural programmatic needs. The architectural work was focused on rehabilitating the existing building’s significant elements, including the noble interior hall and façades, while the interior design project aimed to provide a flexible and adaptable space for cultural activities. The project’s focus is on preserving heritage elements while adapting them to new uses.
